More Than a Photographer

Freedom Garvey-Warr doesn't simply take photographs.

She captures relationships, emotions and the moments that often go unnoticed.

Known throughout the Margaret River region for her relaxed approach to weddings and family photography, Freedom has built a career by creating space for people to simply be themselves.

The result is imagery that feels honest, timeless and deeply personal.

Everything she does begins with people.

Falling in Love with Photography

Long before photography became her career, it was simply a way to hold onto memories.

Growing up and attending boarding school meant holidays back home were precious. Freedom spent every chance she could with family and friends, camera always in hand.

"I'd come home on holidays and just want photos to take back because I missed everyone," she says.

Film rolls, photo albums and printed snapshots became her way of preserving the people she loved.

Only years later did she realise those early "happy snaps" were the beginning of everything.

"I didn't make the connection until much later. I realised I'd always been time-capsuling those moments."

Finding Her Path

Freedom originally enrolled at Curtin University intending to study graphic design.

It wasn't until first-year photography classes that everything changed.

Inspired by lecturers who encouraged experimentation and creativity, she discovered there was room to build a career behind the camera.

"They told me they wanted me in their photography major. That completely changed everything."

That encouragement gave Freedom the confidence to pursue photography professionally.

A Leap to the South West

After university, Freedom had opportunities to continue building her career in Perth, including assisting respected wedding photographer Denise Teo.

Instead, she chose a different path.

She packed up and moved to the South West.

Working in hospitality and the local wine industry while slowly building photography clients, she became part of the community first.

Photography followed naturally.

As locals got to know her, conversations turned into portrait sessions, commercial shoots and eventually weddings.

"It just slowly started ticking away."

Discovering Wedding Photography

Ironically, weddings became the very thing Freedom once thought she would never photograph.

She soon realised that what she loved most wasn't the event itself.

It was the people.

The hugs.

The nervous laughter.

The quiet moments between couples.

The family connections that unfold throughout a wedding day.

Capturing those authentic moments became the foundation of her business.

Building a Business Together

As demand grew, Freedom's husband Damien "Taco" Warr naturally became part of the business.

What started with carrying camera bags evolved into editing, second shooting and eventually becoming an essential creative partner.

Today, they photograph weddings together across the South West while raising their young family.

Together they've built a business that reflects both their creative talents and shared love of storytelling.

Inspiration Beyond Weddings

While weddings remain at the heart of her work, one of Freedom's greatest sources of inspiration comes from mentoring with the Kalumburu Photography Collective.

Working alongside young Aboriginal women in remote Western Australia has transformed the way she thinks about photography.

Watching participants instinctively create powerful images reminded her that meaningful photographs aren't always technically perfect.

They're about emotion.

They're about significance.

"They're more about feelings than perfection."

That philosophy now influences every wedding, family session and portrait she photographs.

Why Human Connection Matters

After photographing thousands of people over the years, Freedom's favourite image isn't necessarily the most technically impressive.

It's a simple portrait of a young couple from Kalumburu holding hands and laughing together.

For Freedom, it represents everything photography can be.

Connection.

Love.

Storytelling.

A reminder that every person deserves to have their story seen.

Freedom's journey reminds us that great photography is about far more than cameras or technical skill.

It's about curiosity, empathy and making people feel comfortable enough to simply be themselves.
